Natural
gas is odorless, colorless, non-toxic and has no taste in its natural
state. To make it easy to detect even the smallest leak, a harmless
chemical called mercaptan is added, which smells like sulfur or rotten
eggs. If you suspect that you have a natural gas leak, follow the
guidelines below to protect the safety of your home or business and give
us a call.
How to Detect a Leak
Use your nose. If you smell or hear gas escaping inside a building or
notice dirt blowing, bubbles in a puddle or a hissing sound outside,
there may be a gas leak.
If you smell
natural gas inside a building:
Do
open windows and doors
Do leave the building
Do use a cell phone outside the building or a neighbor’s
phone to call (day or night)
Do not turn on or
off any electrical switches
Do not use the telephone
Do not smoke
Do not light a match or do anything that might create
sparks
Do not attempt to put out fires if a gas leak ignites.
